Immediate prosthesis

immediate denture.jpg

When teeth need to be removed and the goal is to replace them with a full denture, the patient has 2 options. First, to reduce costs, it is possible to let the bone and gum heal for 3 months.

When teeth are removed, a bone change will begin. The major part of this reshuffle will take 3 months, which explains the recommended delay to avoid having to rebase his prosthesis (add material underneath to fill the void left by the bone reshuffle).

If you are not interested in the option of spending 3 months without a tooth, it is possible to have an immediate prosthesis. An appointment will take place before the extraction of the teeth to take the impressions and choose the parameters of the prosthesis. (The latter is made with the same materials as a conventional complete prosthesis) The prosthesis will be created by approximating how the bone and gum will be once the teeth are removed. Since there will be no intermediate step where you can change the parameters as you go along, some details may not be exactly as the patient would have liked.

There are even rare cases where the patient chooses to redo his prosthesis after a few months since certain details bother him too much. The immediate prosthesis usually requires a few follow-up appointments to adjust the prosthesis as the bone heals. A relining is usually necessary after 3 months to fill the space created by the reorganization of the bone. (costs not included in the price of the prosthesis)
